Danny Boyle Film Festival
Film Office is pleased to support and promote the Danny Boyle Film Festival at St Clements Hospital on Bow Road!
Shuffle Festival: 8 - 18th August 2013 22 July 2013 - London
This August, St Clement's Social Club is hosting Shuffle, an 11-day festival of activities and cinema to represent the wealth of talent in and around Mile End. The festival will combine a film programme curated by Danny Boyle with live music, theatre, art and site-specific activities. These events will take place on the site of St Clement's Hospital, a former Victorian workhouse and psychiatric hospital in Mile End, which is to be redeveloped in 2014.
Shuffle aims to be inclusive of London's diverse and unique groups, ensuring they have a lasting place, and base, in this groundbreaking development, which will be home to the UK's first urban Community Land Trust.
Films will be played across two screens, indoor and outdoor. The indoor screen, along with live music and theatre events, will be situated in a 1950s
theatre on the hospital site. The outdoor screen, hosted by Time Out, will be located in the hospital grounds.
The festival will open on Thursday 8th August with a screening of crime thriller Shallow Grave by Danny Boyle, who will be present to introduce the film on the outdoor screen and give a Q&A for the audience at the indoor screen. The indoor screenings and Q&A are sold out, but a small number of tickets remain for the outdoor showing.
Boyle will also be showcasing some of his other films - Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire and Trance - as well as screenings of the National Theatre's Frankenstein and the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, both of which he directed.
Other film highlights include London: The Modern Babylon (2012) plus Q&A with director Julien Temple, a Bollywood-themed day and short films presented by London Short Film Festival. The festival will close on Sunday 18th August with an All Day Movie Marathon.
On 11th August, the festival will host 'Day of the Mind', a family fete day supported by the Wellcome Trust, recognising the history of St Clement's as a psychiatric hospital. The event will incorporate scientific elements into the arts programme and encourage discussion and debate that tackles the stigma surrounding mental health. Highlights include Ruby Wax's standup performance of 'Out of Her Mind', workshops for children and adults and a screening of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest(1975) on the outdoor screen.
Tickets to evening screenings on Fridays and Saturdays will also include entry to an after-party, featuring live music with a special tie to the main presentation; highlights include "Europe's Number One Jimi Hendrix tribute band" Are You Experienced performing after a screening of cult classic Withnail & I on August 10th.
Shuffle will take place from 8 - 18th August 2013 at St Clement's Social Club, Mile End Road, London. For more information and full programme, visit shufflefestival.com.
